Health Insurance
Let's face
it, in today's world, health insurance is a necessity. With medical expenses
soaring higher and higher, paying for them could have you digging deeper and
deeper into your pockets.
Where can I get
health insurance?
You may get health insurance through your employer on a group plan or by purchasing an individual plan
on your own. By purchasing an individual plan on your own, you may even be able
to customize the health plan.
What types of health insurance plans are available?
-
Individual Health Insurance
plans have traditionally been referred to as Major Medical policies. These types
of plans offer very broad coverage including hospital, doctor office visits and
prescription drug coverage designed to protect you against losses from
catastrophic illness or injury.
-
HSA. An individual
health plan that has gained popularity is called an HSA, i.e.. Health Savings
Account plan. An HSA is an alternative to comprehensive health insurance; it is a
health plan that allows people a different way to pay for their health care
by securing a high deductible health insurance policy and opening a savings
account called an HSA that enables you to pay for current health expenses and
save for future medical and retire expenses on a tax-free basis. These
plans allow for greater flexibility and discretion over how
you use your health care benefits by paying less for your health insurance plan
using your saved dollars on health care that is not commonly paid for by
traditional plans. The hope is that people with HSA's will be more discriminating
about health care purchases and shop around, rather than go anywhere at any cost
when an insurance company is paying for it.
-
Temporary Health
Insurance, or Short-term Health Insurance. If you are looking for a
flexible plan, that covers you for a short-term period, consider this type
of plan. Short Term Health Insurance offers security and similar benefits to
standard health care plans for coverage form 30 to 555 days, depending on
your state. It is a low-cost alternative to COBRA, being in-between jobs,
and for 64-year olds, approaching Medicare.
